Summer has arrived in Dawson and DWS has a jam packed schedule of awesome workshops!

GIVE ME ALL THE INFO!

Who:

All women*, Two Spirit, non-binary, gender expansive folks that want to learn new skills in a space that centres women’s experiences are very welcome to DWS’ summer workshops. Kids under thirteen years-old are asked to come with an adult buddy.

*DWS includes both transgender and cisgender women whenever we use the word ‘women’. We also recognize the transphobic history (and sometimes existing experiences) of the women shelters’ movement and are working to create gender liberation.

Where:

All workshops - except August 25th with Joella - are planned to happen in DWS’ outdoor garden. Please plan and dress for some fun outdoor learning. We’ve got lots of sunscreen!

For the safety of the folks who use Dawson Women’s Shelter’s services, our location is confidential. For folks who already know DWS’ physical location – please keep this info confidential. For folks who don’t yet know DWS’ location – when you register, we’ll let you know where we are and directions to the shelter.

What about rain?

In the event of rain (or snow, it is the subarctic!) we will postpone workshops to the following Wednesday, weather permitting. Participants will be contacted and kept informed of weather-related changes.

RSVP:

To increase covid safety, we’re asking folks to register for each workshop by phone or email: 867.993.5086 or garden@dawsonwomensshelter.com.

Batiking with DWS

Batik is a traditional fabric dyeing technique from Indonesia that uses wax to both fix and resist dyes. By painting wax onto cotton and submerging our cloth in various dye baths we will create multilayered works of art that you can take home with you. Have something you’re excited to batik? If it’s cotton, bring it to the workshop! DWS will also have lots of material ready to be batiked.

Cyanotype Prints with DWS

Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic printing processes using iron salt solutions and ultraviolet light from the sun to expose various natural materials in white with a deep blue backdrop. This art is most often practiced on paper but for this workshop we’ll be using fabric. We will provide cotton and collected natural materials but feel free to bring your own items or cotton goodies to dye if there’s something you’re excited to try.

Oxymels with DWS

Prepare oxymels made from botanical boreal medicine. The ancient Greek word oxymeli translates to “acid and honey” and that is indeed what this beautiful elixir is! Oxymels are herbal extractions prepared with vinegar (in this case apple cider vinegar) and raw honey. By combining the healthful properties of both, along with imbibing our brew with foraged medicine, we can bottle the healing bounty of the summer season. Mason jars will be provided along with all other materials.

Fire Cider Forging with DWS

Create nourishing fire cider to keep the colds at bay throughout the winter season. Fire cider is a folk medicine using apple cider vinegar as a base with added powerhouse herbs (think garlic, turmeric, black pepper, cayenne, ginger, horseradish, lemon, cloves, orange, onion, etc.) to create a hot, pungent, sweet, and sour tonic for overall wellness. All botanical and medicinal materials required to make fire cider will be provided along with the take home mason jars.
