The Dawson Women’s Shelter (DWS) is currently hiring a Permanent Part-Time Shelter Attendant

Position: Shelter Attendant, Permanent Part-Time

Start date: November 2025

Wage: $31 per hour; overnight shifts (sleep shift from 10pm-9am) are paid a rate of $224.25 with additional pay provided when urgent work is performed during the shift

Benefits: This position is eligible to join the Dawson Shelter Society’s Extended Health Benefits Plan after 6 months of continuous work

Availability: Weekends; weekdays, evening or overnight shifts as scheduled

Under the direction of the Executive Director and Program Managers, and in a manner that is consistent with the objectives of the Dawson Shelter Society, a DWS Shelter Attendant carries out day-to-day front line support work and case management, answers calls on the 24-hour support line, responds to resident and service user needs, supports with programming, provides referrals, and maintains cleanliness and safety within the shelter.

Qualifications:

• Keen interest to work with and support women and children in crisis

• Strong understanding of the dynamics of gendered violence and abuse as well as structural and systemic violence

• Ability to listen non-judgmentally & to show empathy

• Self-motivated; ability to work independently and as part of our team

• Ability to problem solve and resolve conflict appropriately

• Understanding of the impacts of ongoing colonization on Indigenous Peoples, the history of residential schools in Canada, and intergenerational trauma

• Intersectional feminist analysis and ability to work from within an antiracism/anti-oppression framework, knowledge of a harm reduction approach and practices

• Front line support work or volunteer experience is required

• Diploma/degree in Women and Gender Studies (or equivalent volunteering or study) or related field an asset but not required

• Required: RCMP vulnerable persons sector check, willingness to become First Aid/CPR certified within 3 months

Duties:

• Work with women, other marginalized genders, and children who have experienced violence and homelessness; provide support in DWS’ residential and drop-in programs as well as on our 24-hour support line

• Follow policies, protocols and procedures – including health & safety related, adhere to strict confidentiality policy

• Accurate record keeping according to guidelines

• Household chores and cleaning, general office work as assigned

• Helping with programming and workshops as needed

• Duties as assigned by Executive Director including attending staff training and monthly team meetings

• Be available to work daytime, evening, weekend, and overnight shifts as part of shelter attendant role
