16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

From November 25 to December 10 we call on everyone to take action to end gender-based violence. Check out all the events and activities organized by many awesome groups in Dawson.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

16 Days in Dawson

For 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence, Dawson Women's Shelter is offering two three-hour workshops for community members.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOPS
IT'S NOT JUST PHYSICAL

Many folks want to help someone who is being abused, but don't know what to look for. Learn to recognize the signs of an abusive relationship and to think about gender-based violence past what we're taught in movies and TV.

When: Wednesday, December 6th from 1-4pm

HELPING A FRIEND

It’s scary to think about our friends, relations, neighbours, classmates, and coworkers, being in danger or being hurt, but sadly we can’t choose who experiences violence and coercion. Learn skills to listen to survivors and offer helpful resources.

When: Thursday, December 7th from 1-4pm

BOTH WORKSHOPS ARE:

  • Like first aid, essential skills we hope we don't have to use

  • Participatory learning, but not a support group. Folks looking for support can connect with DWS and other Yukon & National resources - https://www.dawsonwomensshelter.com/dawson-resources

  • FREE!

  • Include snacks and some pretty awesome doorprizes!

REGISTRATION REQUIRED

  • Online - form below

  • By emailing crickett@dawsonwomensshelter.com
